DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College was established in 1971, The Department of English was also established in 1971. The Department of English language was established in 1971 in Arts and Commerce faculties with compulsory English subject. There was only one full time teacher in Department.

In the year 1994-95 second language and optional subject were introduced in the department and with 2 more teachers, at present there are 3 full time teachers in the Department of English. The department of English deals with pronunciation and basic grammar, communication skills, language and literature, criticism, American and Indian English Literature with project in Research Methodology for III year students.

1)To strengthen student’s ability in listening, speaking, reading and writing both at practical and theoretical level.
2)To enable students to read and appreciate various forms of literature and critically interact with them from different perspectives.
3)To train students both in precision and in appropriate use of language through prose reading.
4)To help students better pronunciation and enable students to acquire the structure of English language.
5)To introduce students to appropriate literary strategies to read literature
6)To enable students to acquire the knowledge of communication Skills.
7)To enable the students understand how the literature of modern period relates to the important trends of the period.
8)To increase the students to the thematic concerns, genres and trends of both Indian writing in English and America literature.
